Create your API credentials in Toast
Toast calls this Standard API access. It is read-only by design — these credentials cannot change a menu, a price, an order or a payment.
-
Sign in to Toast Web and open the credentials page.
Integrations › Toast API access › Manage credentials -
Select the arrow beside Create new credentials, then choose Standard API.
-
Name them something you'll recognise later — Nift works well.
The name is only for you; it appears in Toast's own list of credentials.
-
Choose these three scopes.
orders:readconfig:readguest.pi:readScopes are what the credentials are allowed to see. We read your orders to find the checks where a Nift gift was rung in, and your configuration to know which discount button that is.
-
Under locations, select the location or locations that are on Nift, then Apply.
-
Create the credentials, then copy the client ID and the client secret.
The secret is shown once. Copy it before you leave that page — into a password manager, or straight into the Nift form in part two. If it's gone, delete the credentials in Toast and make a new set. -
Find your restaurant GUID in the email Toast sends you.
Toast emails a confirmation listing each restaurant and its GUID — a long string that looks like
1a2b3c4d-5e6f-…. It's how Toast tells one of your venues from another, so each location has its own. Keep that email; you need the GUID next.
Connect them in your Nift dashboard
Your dashboard link is the one in your welcome email, and it looks like
restaurants.nift.com/dash/…. Sign in there first.
-
Open the Data tab.
-
Choose Toast under Connect your POS.
-
Paste in the client ID, the secret and the restaurant GUID.
If your group has more than one location on Nift, tick the ones this Toast login covers and give each the GUID Toast issued for it.
-
Select Connect.
What you'll see once it's connected
Four things appear that a gift count alone can't tell you.
What Nift guests spend, against your house average. Both figures are food and drink before any discount, with tax and tip taken out, so they're the same measure on both sides.
Incremental sales. The part of the bill that was the guest's own money rather than the gift — the number that answers whether the visit was worth it.
The checks themselves. Each redemption as its own row on the Customers page: date, check size, what came off, party size and what was ordered.
Who came back. Repeat visits, matched on the card the guest paid with, never on anything that identifies them to us or to you.
Questions we get
Can Nift change anything in my Toast account?
No. Standard API access is read-only, so there is no version of this where we could edit a menu, a price, an order or a payment even by accident. We read your orders and your discount list, and nothing else.
Where do I find my restaurant GUID?
In the confirmation email Toast sends after you create the credentials — it lists every restaurant the credentials cover, each with its GUID. It's the same thing Toast's documentation calls the restaurant external ID.
I have several locations. Do I need to do this more than once?
Only if they're on separate Toast accounts. One Toast login that covers several restaurants is one connection here: tick each location and give it the GUID Toast issued for it. Venues on a genuinely separate Toast account get their own connection, and they sync independently.
Two of my locations run on one Toast restaurant. Does that work?
Yes. It's more common than it sounds — two rooms, one Toast setup. Enter the same GUID for both locations and the form offers you Toast's revenue centres so you can say which rooms belong to which. Anything you leave unticked, delivery apps for instance, is counted for neither rather than being quietly swept into one of them.
What happens to my credentials?
They're encrypted before they're stored, and they're never shown back to anyone, including us — the dashboard only ever displays the last four characters of the client ID so you can tell one connection from another. You can disconnect at any time from the same card, which deletes them.
I'm not on Toast.
Clover connects the same way from the same place. If you're on something else, email restaurants@gonift.com and tell us which POS — it's how we decide what to build next. Nift works without any POS connection at all; you just won't see the spend side.
Stuck on any of it?
Send us a note and we'll walk through it with you, or do the dashboard half while you're on the phone.
